When it comes to tying a knot the legal age to get married in the UK differs. The least licit age to get connubial in England and Wales is 18 years old. Currently, a girl or boy can get married at the age of 16 and 17 but only with their parent's consent and permission. Some activists were against this as they think that immature girls or women are coerced to get married at a young age. And this made them sexually abused and mentally torched. 


The former chancellor of the UK is Sajid Javid. Next week he will be presenting the confidential member’s bill. The bill says that it is unlawful to get married before getting 18 years old. He was directed by the justice minister that the bill will be returned to the House of Commons and further it is also predictable that it get cross-party support.

Sajid Javid also said that he saw that 16 years old who was being pressurized to get married as a child abuse. In a triumph of campaigners, the government has announced the lowest licit age if getting married in England is 18 years old. In the letter from the ministry to campaigners also says that the minimum marriage is 18 only until the legislative opportunity arises. The previous month an incident happened that the 4 co-chairs of the association Girls Not Bride UK composed the letter to PM and warned him that the present law on marriage enforcement is not enough to guard the youthful individuals. It is also noticed that when people are enforced to get married at an early age and then they have children, responsibilities exceed and they get deprived.

Law for marriage:

Till the middle of 18th century a certain clergyman of the church in England conduct the marriages. As marriages can be done anywhere in the church so it results as that the people moved towards the secret marriages. These were those whose elders like parents or guardians were not in support of their marriage so they quietly moved to churches and tie a knot with their loved ones. These actions were considered illegal. So legal age to get married in UK was decided and imposed as per law.

Improper marriages:

In 1740s in London the craft of improper marriages was extremely grown up. The couples who have a strong and financially stable background were allowed to get married but one of the partners should be under age. The rich men started getting married to younger women and similarly the rich women started getting married to young men. But the Lord Chancellor, Lord Hardwicke in 1753 promoted the marriage act. He announced that the minister in a parish or chapel of the church in England will conduct the marriage rituals legally. And this is how marriages were brought in to the concern of the government and its related laws were passed according to the time.

Parents concern:

It was declared that no person under the age of 21, either its girl or boy, men or women, no one is allowed to get married without the permission of their parents or guardians. If their elders are not in consent they could not tie a knot secretly. And if any individual go against the orders she or he will be liable for transportation for 14years. However, the Jews and Quakers are not liable to follow the act of 1753. It was for religious and non-followers and Catholics to get married in Anglican churches. And this is how legal age to get married in UK was announced with the period of time.

Free from restrictions:

As the legal age to get married in UK was defined similarly the places of marriage were also announced. But in 1836 marriage act it was declared that there are no restrictions for non-conformists and Catholics to get married at their own worship place. And an ease was given to not religious people too.
